From Our Clinical Director

Men in Connection: Cultivating Strength Through Vulnerability

For many men, emotional life is often relegated to isolation, characterized by internal pressure to maintain an image of unwavering strength and self-reliance. This group provides a necessary counter-narrative: a dedicated space where authentic strength is found not in repression, but in intentional connection and honest vulnerability.

We offer a structured, confidential environment for men to navigate complex emotions, relational challenges, and life transitions such as career shifts, fatherhood, partnership struggles, and the impact of societal expectations. We move beyond surface-level conversation to explore core issues of identity, purpose, and emotional expression.

Utilizing a process-oriented framework, the group actively practices emotional literacy and co-regulation, helping members dismantle outdated coping mechanisms and forge a deeper, more resilient connection with their inner selves and with other men.

This is not a place for fixing, but for finding grounding, speaking truth, and building the capacity for true presence in all areas of life.

Questions men ask us before joining the group

When and where does the group meet?
Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:15 pm, weekly, at 8100 Washington Avenue, Suite 170 in Houston. It runs in person and by telehealth, so you can join from home on the weeks that is the only way you would make it.
Who leads the group?
It is co-led by Ryan Bruce, LMSW, supervised by Mychal Riley, LCSW-S, and Grace Lynch, LMSW, supervised by Yvonne Champion, LCSW-S, CGP. Ryan brings a background in psychodynamic group work and substance use. Grace works with adults across a range of concerns, many of them men. The mixed gender co-leadership is deliberate rather than incidental.
Do I have to talk in my first session?
No. This is a process group, not a round of introductions with a timer. Listening for the first few weeks is a normal way to start, and the leaders will not put you on the spot.
Is what I say in the group confidential?
The leaders are bound by the same confidentiality rules as any Texas clinician, including the legal exceptions around risk of serious harm and suspected abuse. Members agree to keep what is said in the room inside the room, and that agreement is set out at the start, though a group is by nature a room with other people in it and you should weigh that when deciding what to bring.
Can group replace individual therapy?
It is not designed to. Some men do group alongside individual work, some do group on its own, and which makes sense depends on what you are carrying. A weekly group is also not the right level of care during an acute crisis. If you are in crisis now, call or text 988.
How do I find out whether it is a fit?
There is a 15 minute screening call first. It is confidential, there is no commitment attached, and it exists so that both sides can work out whether this particular group suits what you are dealing with. Call (713) 564-5146 or request information from this page.
