What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by significant shifts in mood, energy, and behavior. These changes can range from manic or hypomanic episodes, where you feel elevated, impulsive, or unusually energized, to depressive episodes, which involve feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily life.

There are several types of bipolar disorder, including:

  • Bipolar I Disorder – At least one manic episode lasting 7+ days, often followed by depression.

  • Bipolar II Disorder – A pattern of depressive episodes and hypomania (a less severe form of mania).

  • Cyclothymic Disorder – Chronic mood fluctuations that don’t meet full criteria for bipolar I or II.

Bipolar disorder affects people of all backgrounds and ages. It’s not just about mood swings, it can deeply impact work, relationships, and quality of life. But with the right therapy, treatment can lead to long-term stability and success.

Our Approach to Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Therapy for bipolar disorder isn’t one-size-fits-all. At Connect Clinical Services, we use a holistic, evidence-based approach tailored to your unique symptoms and life experiences. Some of the therapeutic modalities we may integrate include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Helps you challenge unhelpful thoughts and behaviors during depressive or manic episodes.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – Teaches emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills.

  • Psychoeducation – Empowers you to understand your diagnosis, triggers, and warning signs.

  • Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) – Focuses on stabilizing daily routines and social rhythms to reduce mood instability.

  • Family Therapy and Support – Encourages open communication and education for loved ones.

Our therapists also work closely with psychiatrists in the Houston area to ensure coordinated care when medications are part of your treatment plan.

Symptoms to Watch For

Bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed or overlooked, especially during its early stages. Here are some common signs that it may be time to see a bipolar disorder therapist in Houston:

During manic or hypomanic episodes:

  • Excessive energy or decreased need for sleep

  • Risky or impulsive behavior (e.g., overspending, risky sex, quitting jobs)

  • Racing thoughts or rapid speech

  • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity

During depressive episodes:

  • Persistent sadness or emptiness

  • Low energy, fatigue, or sleeping too much

  • Loss of interest in activities

  • Feelings of worthlessness or suicidal thoughts

Questions people ask us about bipolar disorder treatment

Can therapy replace medication for bipolar disorder?
No, and we would not suggest it. For bipolar disorder, medication managed by a prescriber is the foundation of treatment in every major clinical guideline. Therapy works alongside it, on mood monitoring, routine and sleep stability, early warning signs and the damage episodes do to work and relationships. Any decision to change or stop medication belongs with your prescriber, not your therapist.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Our clinicians are licensed therapists and counselors, not prescribers, so we do not manage medication. We do coordinate with your psychiatrist or prescriber when you want us to, because treatment tends to go better when the two sides are talking.
Can you tell me whether I have bipolar disorder?
A clinical assessment is a real part of what we do, but bipolar disorder in particular is often clarified over time rather than in one sitting, because it depends on a pattern of episodes and frequently involves a prescriber. What we can do at the outset is talk through what you have been noticing and be honest about what is and is not clear yet.
What does the therapy itself involve?
Commonly psychoeducation about your own pattern, skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, attention to sleep and daily routine because both are closely tied to mood stability, and work on identifying your early warning signs before an episode is fully underway. Family sessions are available when it helps.
Do you take insurance?
No. Connect Clinical Services is a private pay practice and does not bill insurance. We can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible out of network reimbursement, though whether you are reimbursed, and how much, is between you and your plan. Current fees are listed on our costs page.
